In one hospital in Sweden a doctor went to sleep with ear plugs on while his patient was left unattended to. The 85 year-old stopped breathing and died while the doctor slept away. He didn’t hear the alarm because he was sleeping deeply in his office and had ear plugs on.
The incident as reported by the Metro Newspaper in Sweden on 17 dec 2008 actually took place in March 2008. Why did it take so long to report it in the media? Isn’t there a possibility that other doctors or care givers could have been doing this (setting plugs in their ears) without realizing the dangers of such.
I think it is highly irresponsible for a doctor to do this and it is also a very irresponsible act of communication that this type of incident took 9 months to come out in the news.
Sweden is an open society but information and dangers like this are always kept secret for a long time. If people are going to be in danger for what someone thought is harmless I think it is proper to report it as soon as it happens so that we could all learn from the experience.
